DRILL PRESS FIXTURE

Project Type

Mechanical Design & Fabrication

Date

August 2023

I was tasked with building a new fixture to remove a gate on a large plastic part using a drill press. The previous method being used was not consistent in its results due to its lack of control when it came to positioning and depths of drilling.

My new design replaced the stand of the drill press, removing the ability to adjust the height manually and the placement of the part being retained.

The next point of contention was the variable depths at which the drill press was cutting the gate so I added a stopper using a drill bushing in an aluminum plate suspended above the part.

One of the customer needs was no scratches or blemishes on the part. My solution was to use o-ring stock and foam on the base that the part is secured to then using ball bearing slides on rails to move the part under the drill press to allow for consistency after swapping a new part.
